Structured planning begins with the concept of the Gantt chart.
Gantt Chart
This planning model was introduced by Henry Gantt in 1910 as a tool for engineering processes through a series of sequential tasks.
It embodies a core premise of the Cartesian Mindset, one that believes that all complex systems can be broken apart into their parts, understood in their entirety, and then reconfigured.
By nature this premise is deterministic and assumes a hierarchical control structure. One that became known as a “command and control” management structure.
The concept of Gantt charts are a key tool of scientific management called Taylorism.
The original architects of our traditional education system used these principles, all drawn from the Efficiency Movement, when defining the structure of education that has been in place for more than 100 years.
