We recognize that Piaget's learning theories align closely with the neurological theories being developed by Friston. At the core of Friston's theory is the concept of a 'generative model' that we might think of as the schema by which an individual (or any organism for that matter) perceives the world.
At the core of Piaget's constructivist learning theories was the concept of schemas, a concept borrowed from Hegel. He felt that learner constructed understanding by experience that either deepened and existing understanding of their world – their schema – which he called 'assimilation' or by reconfiguring their understanding, what he called 'accommodation'.
>Initially proposed by Jean Piaget, the term accommodation refers to the part of the adaptation process. The process of accommodation involves altering one's existing schemas, or ideas, as a result of new information or new experiences. New schemas may also be developed during this process. source
